Respecting Government?!

Sometimes we need a bit of whimsy to break up the serious nature of most of these blogs, and something I saw last week is one of those things I don’t know whether to laugh or cry…

I know we’re supposed to respect our leaders, but sometimes it’s hard.

Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good…Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. (1 Peter 2.13 – 17, ESV)

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has decided that their first Presidential Primary will be in South Carolina. But New Hampshire has responded, “Not so fast.”

New Hampshire’s Secretary of State David Scanlan on Wednesday said the state would hold its presidential primary for the 2024 election on Jan. 23. The move comes after the Democratic National Committee scheduled South Carolina to be the first primary on Feb. 3. Republicans in Iowa will hold their caucus on Jan. 15.

Scanlan said in his announcement that New Hampshire has a tradition that has lasted more than 100 years of being the first presidential primary. He added that state law says its presidential primary must be at least a week before every similar event in other states. World Magazine, November 16, 2023

You can’t make this stuff up. How can New Hampshire pass a law that impacts decisions by the DNC and, for that matter, other states that could pass an identical law? Then what would happen?

It’s not unlike the state of Indiana trying to legislate the value of pi.

I might as well throw in that my state, Colorado, put to a popular vote the introduction of wolves into Colorado. Why should I be allowed to vote on something I know nothing about? Something that will not affect me one way or the other, but that might affect the people in the areas where the wolves will be introduced? People who have far fewer votes than we city dwellers from Pueblo to Fort Collins?

I hope you’re having a good Thanksgiving week!
