Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes, it’s still on despite retailers’ attempts to quash it. The Family Circus comic of November 15 shows mom walking into a store with the four kids. The store is already decorated for Christmas, and one of the kids said:

Aren’t they going to have Thanksgiving this year, Mommy?

Yes, “they” are, at least we are. We celebrated with sons Mark and Matt and their families last Saturday. We finally decided there are too many moving parts with in-laws and exes to try to squeeze in their Thanksgiving on the day. June and I are having Thanksgiving dinner at a nice restaurant tonight.

Clockwise around the table beginning with Mark, farthest away: Mark, Kesley, June, Bob, Matt, Amber, Emerson (8)

And ought not every day be Thanksgiving Day, anyway?

  • Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever.
  • Give thanks to the God of gods,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever.
  • Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever;
  • to him who alone does great wonders,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever;
  • to him who by understanding made the heavens,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever;
  • to him who spread out the earth above the waters,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever;
  • to him who made the great lights,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever;
  • the sun to rule over the day,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever;
  • the moon and stars to rule over the night,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever;
  • …It is he who remembered us in our low estate,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever;
  • and rescued us from our foes,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever;
  • he who gives food to all flesh,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever.
  • Give thanks to the God of heaven,
    • for his steadfast love endures forever. (Psalm 136, ESV)

PS Sahil Bloom posted a lovely Thanksgiving meditation centered around:

What did your younger self pray for that you take for granted today?

It’s worth the read in its entirety.

  1. Happy Thanksgiving Bob (& June)!

    Sahil’s post is a great one.

    I was jolted into realizing how happy I am at the end of September when we took our house off the market. Not sure I prayed for anything this grand when I was younger, but I am thankful. While the house was for sale, hearing things about it and the surroundings from those considering it as their home, I realized how much I had taken for granted, living where we do. I can assure you I do not do that anymore. Everyday since the end of September, I look out our windows at the views. God has painted some truly majestic & glorious sunrises on some days. We’ve had a fox visit a couple of times….that never would have happened when we had the bassets. I feel so blessed that Dan & I have started to rework areas that lend themselves to our respective creative interests. I’m very grateful that both Dan & I came to our senses and decided to stay in the home we designed and built a little over 20 years ago. It wasn’t the right time for us to leave yet…..I suspect we have more to do.

    And I wanted to tell you I enjoyed your post on Joy a few days ago too. The picture of Dave. He embodied Joy, although I think he would tell both of us that wasn’t always the case. I miss his insights.

    Enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner out tonight.

  2. Happy Thanksgiving, Bob and June! All of us have so much to be thankful for. God has tremendously blessed us through Jesus Christ, the greatest gift God could have given.

  3. One of my favorite Psalms growing up! I loved the litany aspect. Great observations from Sahil Bloom. We enjoyed a lovely meal with the 6 of us.
