If you don&#8217;t start to receive the blog by email right away, please write to me at bob@ewell.com, and I will see that you get on the list.] <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> I\u2019ve been meditating in the first three verses of Psalm 1 (NIV):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither\u2014whatever they do prospers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very simply, it breaks down into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What blessed people don\u2019t do (verse 1)<\/li><li>What blessed people do (verse 2)<\/li><li>The result (verse 3)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, let\u2019s consider what blessed people don\u2019t do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Walk in step with the wicked<\/li><li>Stand in the way that sinners take<\/li><li>Sit in the company of mockers<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I looked up the three verbs\u2014walk, stand, sit\u2014and landed on \u201csit.\u201d One of the meanings is \u201cabide,\u201d the same idea that occurs often in John 15:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Abide in me and I in you (verse 4)<\/li><li>Abide in my love (verse 9)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAbide\u201d carries the idea of resting in, staying, hanging around. As I write this, I\u2019m abiding in my recliner\u2014easy to get into, hard to get out of!<br>If we\u2019re not abiding in Christ, in what are we abiding?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>News?<\/li><li>Sports?<\/li><li>Talk shows?<\/li><li>Social media?<\/li><li>Self-talk?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of those things is bad for an occasional visit. We take two newspapers. You know I like sports! We\u2019re on Facebook to keep up with the kids. But in what do we abide? I once listened to two men go through the entire Auburn football roster, by number, reviewing each player&#8217;s position, height, weight, hometown, etc., all without anything in front of them. Impressive. They clearly abide in Auburn football!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">June suggested that some of us abide in our self-talk. When we could turn our minds to the constant presence of Jesus, instead we\u2019re busy rehearsing the latest negative conversation or hurtful thing that someone did to us or some other disappointment in our lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s pay attention to where we abide, and <a href=\"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=874\">tomorrow<\/a> I\u2019ll write about the alternative: abiding in Christ through the Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
