Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon\u2019s son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples\u2019 feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, \u201cLord, do you wash my feet?\u201d Jesus answered him, \u201cWhat I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand. (John 13.1 – 7, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

…Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.\u201d The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus\u2019 side, so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, \u201cLord, who is it?\u201d Jesus answered, \u201cIt is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.\u201d So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. (John 13.21 – 26, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus washed the feet of Peter who denied him and Judas who betrayed him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, \u201cTake, eat; this is my body.\u201d And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, \u201cDrink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father\u2019s kingdom.\u201d (Matthew 26.26 – 29, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul brings it home, quoting Jesus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do this in remembrance of me…Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord\u2019s death until he comes. (1 Corinthians 11.23 – 26, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n
