{"id":7105,"date":"2024-03-24T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-24T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=7105"},"modified":"2024-02-16T15:36:38","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T22:36:38","slug":"sixth-sunday-of-lent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=7105","title":{"rendered":"Sixth Sunday of Lent"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sixth Sunday of Lent&#8230;and also Palm Sunday. But it\u2019s hard to get excited about Palm Sunday because I think it\u2019s quite likely that some of the crowds of the Triumphal Entry\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, \u201cHosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!\u201d And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, \u201cWho is this?\u201d And the crowds said, \u201cThis is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.\u201d (Matthew 21.9 \u2013 11, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026were among this crowd:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. The governor again said to them, \u201cWhich of the two do you want me to release for you?\u201d And they said, \u201cBarabbas.\u201d Pilate said to them, \u201cThen what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?\u201d They all said, \u201cLet him be crucified!\u201d And he said, \u201cWhy, what evil has he done?\u201d But they shouted all the more, \u201cLet him be crucified!\u201d (Matthew 27.20 \u2013 23, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For sure, many, if not most, in the Palm Sunday crowd were erroneously expecting Jesus to lead a charge to overthrow the Romans. The disciples were still expecting that in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=acts+1%3A6&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Acts 1<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So let\u2019s get right back to\u00a0our Lenten meditations with stanzas 48 \u2013 53 of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ccel.org\/h\/herbert\/temple\/Sacrifice.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">George Herbert\u2019s poem \u201cThe Sacrifice<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(The bullets allow me to single-space the lines.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>They lead me in once more, and\u00a0 putting then<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Mine own clothes on, they lead me out again.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Whom devils fly, thus is he tossed of men:<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Was ever grief like mine?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>And now weary of sport, glad to engross<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>All spite in one, counting my life their loss,<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>They carry me to my most bitter cross:<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Was ever grief like mine?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>O all ye who pass by, behold and see;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Man stole the fruit, but I must climb the tree;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The tree of life to all, but only me:<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Was ever grief like mine?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Lo, here I hang, charged with a world of sin,<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The greater world o\u2019 th\u2019 two; for that came in<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>By words, but this by sorrow I must win:<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Was ever grief like mine?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Such sorrow as, if sinful man could feel,<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Or feel his part, he would not cease to kneel.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Till all were melted, though he were all steel:<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Was ever grief like mine?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>But, O my God, my God! why leav\u2019st thou me,<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The son, in whom\u00a0 thou dost delight to be?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>My God, my God &#8212;&#8212;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Never was grief like mine.<\/em> \u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/ccel.org\/h\/herbert\/temple\/Sacrifice.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe Sacrifice\u201d by George Herbert,<\/a>\u00a0stanzas 48 \u2013 53.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him. (Matthew 27.31, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots. Then they sat down and kept watch over him there. (Matthew 27.35 &#8211; 36, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, \u201cEli, Eli, lema sabachthani?\u201d that is, \u201cMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me?\u201d (Matthew 27.45 &#8211; 46, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sixth Sunday of Lent&#8230;and also Palm Sunday.
