{"id":7092,"date":"2024-03-10T06:01:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-10T12:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=7092"},"modified":"2024-02-16T15:11:10","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T22:11:10","slug":"fourth-sunday-of-lent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=7092","title":{"rendered":"Fourth Sunday of Lent"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We continue our Lenten meditations with stanzas 29 \u2013 37 of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ccel.org\/h\/herbert\/temple\/Sacrifice.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">George Herbert\u2019s poem \u201cThe Sacrifice<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(The bullets allow me to single-space the lines.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>They choose a murderer, and all agree<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>In him to do themselves a courtesy:<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>For it was their own case who killed me:<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Was ever grief like mine?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>And a seditious murderer he was:<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>But I the Prince of peace; peace that doth pass<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>All understanding, more than heaven doth glass<\/em>:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em>[\u201cglasse\u201d = appear, show in heaven]<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Was ever grief like mine?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Why, Caesar is their only King, not I:<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>He clave the stony rock, when they were dry;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>But surely not their hearts, as I well try:<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Was ever grief like mine?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Ah! Who is it that struck you?\u201d (Matthew 26..67, 68, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>They cried out, \u201cAway with him, away with him, crucify him!\u201d Pilate said to them, \u201cShall I crucify your King?\u201d The chief priests answered, \u201cWe have no king but Caesar.\u201d (John 19.15, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed. \u201cWhich of the two do you want me to release to you?\u201d asked the governor. \u201cBarabbas,\u201d they answered. \u201cWhat shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?\u201d Pilate asked. They all answered, \u201cCrucify him!\u201d \u201cWhy? What crime has he committed?\u201d asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, \u201cCrucify him!\u201d (Matthew 27.20 &#8211; 23, NIV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.
