{"id":7066,"date":"2024-02-25T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-25T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=7066"},"modified":"2024-02-15T09:44:43","modified_gmt":"2024-02-15T16:44:43","slug":"second-sunday-of-lent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=7066","title":{"rendered":"Second Sunday of Lent"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We continue our Lenten meditations with stanzas 9 &#8211; 18 of <a href=\"https:\/\/ccel.org\/h\/herbert\/temple\/Sacrifice.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">George Herbert&#8217;s poem &#8220;The Sacrifice<\/a>.&#8221; Note that many of the stanzas contain what some analysts have called a paradox. Opposites. For example, in the fourth stanza below: &#8220;I suffer binding, who have loosed their bands.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Bullets allow me to single-space the lines.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Arise, arise, they come.\u00a0 Look how they run!<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A<em>las!\u00a0 what haste they make to be undone!<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>How with their lanterns do they seek the sun!<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Was ever grief like mine?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>With clubs and staves they seek me, as a thief,<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Who am the Way and Truth, the true relief;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Most true to those, who are my greatest grief:<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Was ever grief like mine?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Judas, dost thou betray me with a kiss?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Canst thou find hell about my lips? Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, \u201cThe one I will kiss is the man; seize him.\u201d And he came up to Jesus at once and said, \u201cGreetings, Rabbi!\u201d And he kissed him. Jesus said to him, \u201cFriend, do what you came to do.\u201d Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. (Matthew 26.46 &#8211; 50, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward.
