{"id":6243,"date":"2023-08-01T17:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-01T23:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=6243"},"modified":"2023-07-31T09:14:02","modified_gmt":"2023-07-31T15:14:02","slug":"the-teacher-and-the-outcast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=6243","title":{"rendered":"The Teacher and the Outcast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In John 1, the text says clearly that <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=6220\" target=\"_blank\">some believe and some don&#8217;t<\/a>; this is illustrated beautifully in John 3 and John 4. Who would your money be on if all you knew was that one was a pious, law-keeping Bible teacher and the other was a Samaritan woman not even well-regarded in her own village? But we all know the outcome:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nicodemus, the religious leader, heard a long &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+3%3A1-21&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\">born-again<\/a>&#8221; speech and walked away. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.angel.com\/signup\/the-chosen?msclkid=382c812331ff10b69821e5e2bd24fd92\" target=\"_blank\">The Chosen<\/a> depicts Jesus inviting him to travel with him and his followers, but Nicodemus sadly opts out.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cEveryone\u2019s here?\u201d Jesus says, scanning the square. \u201cYes.\u201d Mary looks around. \u201cThis is all of us.\u201d All of them? Nicodemus wonders, is he making a mistake? Should he show himself, take the step? He cannot. But how he longs to! \u201cIs there anyone else?\u201d Jesus calls out, as the one they call Simon splashes his face from the well and playfully flicks water on John. Nicodemus knows Jesus is looking for him, waiting for him, hoping he\u2019ll come. \u201cLook at this!\u201d Simon squats to retrieve a purple bag at the base of the fountain. \u201cWhat is that?\u201d another says. \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d Simon says. \u201cLet\u2019s find out.\u201d He opens it to reveal coins. \u201cGold.\u201d One of the men, dressed differently from the others, leans close to see. \u201cA friend of mine left that for us,\u201d Jesus tells them. \u201cThat\u2019s enough for two weeks of food and lodging,\u201d the finely dressed one says. Jesus looks toward the wall and shakes his head. \u201cYou came so close,\u201d he whispers, and Nicodemus winces, weeping. <\/em>(Nicodemus is a consistent character in Season 1. This exchange is in Episode 8 and is from the novelized account of season 1: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Chosen-Have-Called-You-Name\/dp\/1646070208\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1LTEBCODA9WYU&amp;keywords=the+chosen+i+have+called+you+by+name+book&amp;qid=1690408270&amp;sprefix=The+Chosen+I+have+%2Caps%2C140&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">I Have Called You by Name<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Woman at the Well heard the message and joyfully invited the entire village:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, \u201cCome, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?\u201d They went out of the town and were coming to him. (John 4.28 &#8211; 30, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One disappears back into his &#8220;normal&#8221; life; the other leaves her water jar (and her former life) to become a spokesperson for Jesus. Besides their responses, what&#8217;s the difference? Stay tuned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman\u2019s testimony, \u201cHe told me all that I ever did.\u201d So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, \u201cIt is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.\u201d (John 4.39 &#8211; 42, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In John 1, the text says clearly that some believe and some don&#8217;t; this is illustrated beautifully in John 3 and John 4.
