We left the Israelites excited that God had taken notice of them and was going to deliver them. A promising start<\/a>. And Moses wastes no time: he gets right to it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afterward Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, \u201cThus says the LORD, the God of Israel, \u2018Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.\u2019\u201d (Exodus 5.1, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that doesn’t go over well at all. Pharaoh immediately blows them off (and God) and surmises that the people have too much time on their hands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the taskmasters and the foremen of the people went out and said to the people, \u201cThus says Pharaoh, \u2018I will not give you straw. Go and get your straw yourselves wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced in the least.\u2019\u201d So the people were scattered throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw. The taskmasters were urgent, saying, \u201cComplete your work, your daily task each day, as when there was straw.\u201d And the foremen of the people of Israel, whom Pharaoh\u2019s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and were asked, \u201cWhy have you not done all your task of making bricks today and yesterday, as in the past?\u201d Then the foremen of the people of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, \u201cWhy do you treat your servants like this? No straw is given to your servants, yet they say to us, \u2018Make bricks!\u2019 And behold, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people.\u201d But he said, \u201cYou are idle, you are idle; that is why you say, \u2018Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.\u2019 Go now and work. No straw will be given you, but you must still deliver the same number of bricks.\u201d Exodus 5.10 – 18, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Continue to make bricks, but gather your own straw!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of us have read this story before, so we know how it comes out, but things aren’t looking good at the end of chapter 5. The Israeli foremen accuse Moses of making things worse, and Moses takes it straight to God:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foremen of the people of Israel saw that they were in trouble when they said, \u201cYou shall by no means reduce your number of bricks, your daily task each day.\u201d They met Moses and Aaron, who were waiting for them, as they came out from Pharaoh; and they said to them, \u201cThe LORD look on you and judge, because you have made us stink in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.\u201d Then Moses turned to the LORD and said, \u201cO Lord, why have you done evil to this people? Why did you ever send me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all.\u201d (Exodus 5.19 – 23, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We haven’t even gotten started yet, and Moses is saying, “You have not delivered your people at all!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patience, my man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, friends, wait patiently for the Master’s Arrival. You see farmers do this all the time, waiting for their valuable crops to mature, patiently letting the rain do its slow but sure work. Be patient like that. Stay steady and strong. The Master could arrive at any time. (James 5.7, 8, MSG)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
