{"id":5511,"date":"2023-01-18T17:27:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-19T00:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=5511"},"modified":"2023-01-17T21:31:00","modified_gmt":"2023-01-18T04:31:00","slug":"life-lessons-from-sports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=5511","title":{"rendered":"Life lessons from sports"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t want my Genesis meditations to get ahead of your readings if you&#8217;re following our <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1y8dYJjhEu-cD_1Vk8VDsIgK8cym-zFSg\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pentateuch Reading Plan<\/a>, so let&#8217;s pause for some lessons from the world of sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first is from Georgia&#8217;s complete domination of TCU in the college championship on January 9. <strong>65 &#8211; 7<\/strong> if you missed it. No typo: Georgia 65, TCU 7. It&#8217;s always instructive to hear what the coach attributed his team&#8217;s greatness to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coach Kirby Smart listed Georgia&#8217;s values:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hard work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No entitlement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of those will preach! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked before the game what his strategy was, Kirby said, \u201cAggression. We intend to go after them.&#8221; And they did. Maybe we could learn something:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This is no afternoon athletic contest that we&#8217;ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels. (Ephesians 6.12, MSG)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second lesson comes from the NFL wildcard playoff game between the Los Angeles Chargers (formerly the San Diego Chargers) and the Jacksonville Jaguars on January 14. I have a special interest in the Jaguars since their second-year quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, piloted Clemson to the national championship after the 2018 season. In that game, leading Alabama 31 &#8211; 16 at halftime (Clemson went on to win 44 &#8211; 16), Clemson coach Dabo Swinney responded to a reporter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/drbobewell.com\/?p=291\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ain\u2019t nothin\u2019 less important than the halftime score<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyway, back to the Chargers\/Jaguars game, the Chargers were ahead 27 &#8211; 0 late in the second quarter. Trevor had thrown four interceptions. <strong>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/recap?gameId=401437998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Jaguars won the game 31 &#8211; 30<\/a><\/strong>. Trevor said in the post-game interview:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>[This is] what belief can do and to see when a team believes in each other what you can accomplish. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He no doubt also believed, &#8220;Ain&#8217;t nothing less important than the halftime score.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
