“Go thou and do likewise” is the end of the parable of the Good Samaritan. It’s easy to brush over, but let’s remind ourselves of the context. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just then a religious scholar<\/strong> stood before Jesus in order to test his doctrines. He posed this question: \u201cTeacher, what requirement must I fulfill if I want to live forever in heaven?\u201d Jesus replied,\u00a0\u201cWhat do you read in the Law? How do you understand it?\u201d The religious scholar<\/strong> answered, \u201cIt states, \u2018You must love the Lord God with all your heart, all your passion, all your energy, and your every thought. And you must love your neighbor as yourself.\u2019\u201d Jesus said,\u00a0\u201cThat is correct. Now go and do exactly that and you will live.\u201d Wanting to justify himself, he questioned Jesus further, saying, \u201cWhat do you mean by \u2018my neighbor\u2019?\u201d (Luke 10.25 – 29, TPT emphasis mine)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The story of the Good Samaritan answers the question of the “religious scholar” – we might say Bible student – “Who is my neighbor?” and closes with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n So, now, tell me, which one of the three men who saw the wounded man proved to be the true neighbor?\u201d The religious scholar responded, \u201cThe one who demonstrated kindness and mercy.\u201d Jesus said, \u201cYou must go and do the same as he.\u201d (Luke 10.36, 37, TPT)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n It doesn\u2019t matter that I am a \u201creligious scholar.\u201d What matters is that I\u2019m loving my neighbor. Paul said the same thing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, \u2026 but have not love, I am nothing.
